How to Set Up Automated Sales Signal Monitoring with Clay and Google News
Why Sales Signal Monitoring is Essential for B2B Outreach
Sales signals and triggers are revolutionizing B2B prospecting. When companies announce store expansions, brand partnerships, or product launches, they create perfect outreach opportunities. The challenge? Manually tracking these signals across thousands of companies is impossible. If you're planning an automated system at scale, check the Clay pricing guide and consider the Clay MBA for templates and signal-monitoring exercises.
This automated approach lets you monitor Google News for specific keywords, identify relevant companies, and build targeted prospect lists - all while you sleep.
Setting Up Your Google News Monitoring System
Step 1: Define Your Target Keywords
Start by identifying the signals that matter for your business:
- Store expansion
- Brand partnerships
- Product launches
- New brand campaigns
- Funding announcements
- Key executive hires
Google News aggregates content from multiple sources, making it perfect for comprehensive monitoring. For lightweight feed conversion and prep utilities, see our tools page.
Step 2: Convert Google News to RSS Feed
Since Clay doesn't natively support daily automated table runs, you'll need an RSS feed converter:
- Search your keywords on news.google.com
- Copy the search results URL
- Use RSS.app (or similar tool) to convert the URL into an RSS feed
- This creates a JSON RSS feed that updates automatically
Step 3: Automate Data Flow with Make
Set up Make (formerly Integromat) to bridge Google News and Clay:
- Configure Make to check your RSS feed daily
- Set up a webhook in Clay as your data destination
- Use POST method with raw JSON content
- Send the news article URLs to Clay automatically
Zapier works as an alternative if you prefer that platform.
Building Your Clay Automation Workflow
Extract Companies from News Articles
Once article links flow into Clay, use Claude AI to identify mentioned companies:
Prompt template: "From this article, derive which company or companies are the main topic. Output their name(s) and nothing else. If multiple companies are mentioned, provide a comma-separated list."
This approach works better than relying on article metadata, which often lacks company information. If you want to learn more about using AI in outreach workflows, see our ClaudeGTM course: ClaudeGTM.
Enrich and Qualify Companies
- Find domains: Use Clay's "Find domain from company name" feature
- Company enrichment: Pull full LinkedIn profiles and company data
- Apply filters: Set criteria like employee headcount (<5,000) or geographic location
- Conditional logic: Only proceed with companies meeting your ICP
Prospect Identification and Contact Discovery
For qualified companies:
- Find decision makers (VP Marketing, Head of Growth, etc.)
- Extract work emails using Clay's email finder
- Build prospect lists with full contact information
Advanced Optimization Strategies
Handling Multiple Companies per Article
News roundups often mention 5-10 companies. Set up your Clay table to handle multiple company extractions per article, increasing your lead volume significantly.
Categorizing Triggers
Use AI to categorize each article by trigger type:
- Brand partnership
- Store expansion
- Product launch
- New campaign
This enables personalized outreach messaging based on the specific trigger.
Improving Match Rates
If email discovery fails for your primary contact, automatically search for alternative contacts at the same company. While success rates decrease for secondary contacts, the volume increase often justifies the additional enrichment costs.
Scaling Your Signal Monitoring
Keyword Expansion
Once your system runs smoothly, expand monitoring to include:
- Security breach announcements
- Executive departures
- Office relocations
- Technology adoptions
- Partnership announcements
Multi-Source Integration
Beyond Google News, consider monitoring:
- Industry publications
- Company press release pages
- LinkedIn company updates
- SEC filings for public companies
Implementation Tips for Success
Start simple: Begin with 2-3 high-value keywords before expanding Monitor quality: Regularly review extracted companies for accuracy Refine targeting: Adjust qualification criteria based on campaign performance Test messaging: Different triggers require different outreach approaches
The ROI of Automated Signal Monitoring
This system transforms reactive prospecting into proactive opportunity capture. Instead of generic cold outreach, you're contacting prospects at the perfect moment - when they're actively growing and likely need your solution.
Companies expanding stores might need marketing analytics. New brand partnerships often require campaign measurement tools. Your timing becomes your competitive advantage.

everyone Hans here holidays are over August is gone September has started that means it's time for new videos new tutorials I'm very happy to be back very happy to show you some new cool stuff that I've been thinking about um the other day I posted about signals signals and triggers and that type of thing they're really hot right now um and I noticed that a lot of people um seem to not know how to set up these signals even though they're pretty easy straightforward to set up so today is is a episode or video about signals um and we're going to be using Google News RSS feeds and obviously clay to set up signal campaigns as always I'm very excited to show you let's dive in here we are so this is Google News um so news.google.com you they monitor the web for you so they aggregate the news from different sources and we can do keyword search searches there so in this case we had a client they wanted to monitor for new brand Partnerships or store expansion new brand campaigns um types of launches maybe new TV ad launches uh and you know these are the same so store expansion just different types of keywords or product launches that type of thing um and they want to monitor for brands or companies that were doing just that and as you can see you can use um you know the same way you use in LinkedIn you know your you know you can you can um add your searches in in here in the search bar so will search for all of these keywords right here and this the news that um that we get so Whole Foods they open a new store Goodwill opens a new store they open a new store um let's see and kvar launches a new brand campaign homark and NFL they have a new brand partnership and for this company for this client that was something that they wanted to monitor because that meant um you know it was a trigger for them that they could say hey notice that you're launching a new product or you have a new brand partnership uh how do you measure the success of all of that basically so we want to monitor all of this automatically and find out which companies are involved and then reach out to those companies that's the basic idea there's a lot ways to do that we're going to use the the simplest most easy way um as far as I'm aware and just turn this into an RSS feed there are a lot of tools for that um I'm using a tool called RSS do apppp to allows you to you to um turn anything into an RSS feed so you basically say okay you know what this URL right here as you can see there's the input um you know turn that into an RSS feed and then here we have a Json RSS feed so that's great that means that you know all that news that we saw right here with a little bit of a delay you can see they're a little bit behind but that's fine they turn that into an RSS feed then what we're going to do just because clay doesn't allow for um let's say daily like they don't allow you to rerun a table at certain times so we're also going to involve make so we have Google news here we turn that into RSS feed and then here in make you can use or yeah make um I was going to call integr map but um yeah not anymore you can also use zapier for this or you know other platforms and basically what we're going to do is we're going to tell it this RSS feed every I think I said every day yeah every day or every X hours put in all the news um and send that to Clay and then um here within clay we get all the links and we can continue with our next step so next step is using cayen so we have cayen right here we're using the neon model big fan and basically saying from the article deriv which company companies or brands are the topic of this article output their name or names and nothing else if multiple companies are the main topic of this article I'll put them in a comma separated list here's the article and then we just repeat it so it gives us the company so here Atkins launches product great you know the company being mentioned Atkins um then here real link announces I'm not sure what they announced but real link is being mentioned etc etc so that's that then we have the companies that are being mentioned in that article um and the reason we're doing it this way is sometimes the article links to you know these companies sometimes they don't we you know we're going to use clay to then turn that that company those companies um into a full and risk profile so we have first second third fourth fifth in some case with multiple companies um because sometimes there's a round up like there's the um store expension Roundup for example it Mak like 10 different companies so that is um that is the case here and then basically all that we're going to do we're going to say this company so Atkins is one example that we used find domain from company it will find this the domain from Atkins you can again use cayen for that you can use different methods I just went the lazy route and use f domain from company name uh because usually also these are pretty big companies that are being mentioned so Mets rate should be good um and the error rate should be really close to zero which is also pretty important um so then here we get their um the domains and the same you know for up to 10 companies so we get all these companies that either expended their stores or launched a new brand campaign uh or did these things that are important to us um and now we have them right here in clay the next step is pretty obvious we want to find people at those companies um so uh first of all you know I categorized the article so it could be brand partnership new product new store New Brand campaign we have these keywords right here and I want to know okay um you know to which keyword is belong you can also say I'm just going to set up a a new clay table or a new RSS feed for each keyword um and you can split it out that way um you know that this there's a few ways you can do it you can go about it you can say okay new RSS feed but they all go to the same clay table but if Source equals RSS feed1 then assign you know brand partnership whatever um I just used GPT for it and it's you know accurate enough so that we can say Okay um you know the trigger is store expansion or the trigger is brand partnership Etc um not the cleanest way of doing it uh but it's the fastest way of doing it which is also sometimes important um so we have those companies and then we obviously want to enrich them um to qualify them because some are not a good fit so we have the domain we use that domain to enrich them get their full profile you know from LinkedIn and all that and then we can say uh because in this case the client only wants to Res out the companies with up to head count of 5,000 for example so first we find their domain then we enrich them then we qualify them and we can set up condition rules right here saying um you know find context at company if uh let's see so if the employee head count is below 5,000 and location is any of these countries then find you know uh find the decision maker those companies so we enrich the companies we had a look okay um do they match their qualification criteria if they did then find their VPO marketing for Company 2 3 4 five up to 10 um the same thing and that's it that's everything that we did this table so that's how you use Google News um in combination with make and in this case RSS do apppp to set up your own uh signal monitoring for keywords in this case for brand partnership store expansion uh you can monitor for funding news you can monitor for key hires there's a lot of things you can monitor for you can monitor for security breaches um you know sky is the limit your imagination is is is your only limitation I guess um so that's how you set that up if you want a bit more inform that let me know um if you found it helpful please let me know as well if you have anything else that you want to request as a next tutorial let me know as well for now thanks for watching as always and hopefully see you soon bye-bye
